Koninklijke Sphinx, originally founded under the name Petrus Regout in 1834 in Maastricht, developed from a local producer of glass and earthenware to an internationally known manufacturer of mainly sanitary ware and tiles. After the death of founder Petrus Laurentius Regout in 1878, the company continued to grow under the leadership of his descendants and became one of the most important players in the Dutch industrial revolution.
The factory, known for its innovative production methods and diverse product range, became a symbol of industrial progress. By introducing the "Sphinx" brand and the Sphinx as a logo in 1879, the company confirmed its status and quality on the international market. In the twentieth century, Sphinx focused more on sanitary ware and tiles, which led to various takeovers and mergers, including the one with Société Céramique in 1958, resulting in NV Sphinx-Céramique.
After obtaining the Royal predicate in 1959, the company changed its name to NV Koninklijke Sphinx. Production in Maastricht ended in 2010, when owner Sanitec decided to move production activities to Sweden. This led to the loss of more than a hundred jobs. Only the marketing department and a warehouse remained in Maastricht. The brand name "Sphinx" was used by Geberit until 2019.
