Mosa

Royal Mosa, founded in 1883 by Hubert Gérard Louis (Louis I) Regout and his son Louis II Regout in Meerssen, now Maastricht, was the first Dutch porcelain factory. Initially, the factory mainly produced Chinese imitation porcelain, but in 1888 it also began producing ceramic wall tiles. Over the years, the company expanded its range and modernized its production processes, including the transition to the manufacture of earthenware in 1932 in response to the reduced demand for porcelain.

Mosa has had various owners and developments over the years. In 1968, Mosa transformed from a family business to a public limited company. In 1972, the company came under the Thyssen Bornemisza group and later, in 1975, it became part of DSM. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 1983, Mosa received the title 'Royal'. In 2008, the factories in Maastricht produced five million square meters of wall and floor tiles, a significant portion of which was destined for export. Mosa, now one of the larger employers in Maastricht.
