Other Norway
Norway has a surprisingly rich ceramics tradition, especially since the 20th century, with a number of tableware factories that have excelled in Scandinavian design. Here are some of the best known:
1. Figgjo Flint
Founded in 1941 in Figgjo, near Stavanger, this is Norway's best-known tableware factory. Figgjo Flint became famous for its colourful, modern designs in the 1960s and 1970s, often designed by Turi Gramstad Oliver . Its collections such as Market , Lotte , Clupea and Daisy are iconic and still loved by collectors. The style is playful, with hand-drawn illustrations and bright colours.
2. Stavangerflint
Active from 1949 to 1979, and later merged with Figgjo. Stavangerflint produced sturdy pottery with decorative prints, often in retro colours. Designers such as Kåre Berven Fjeldsaa gave the brand a recognisable mid-century look. Well-known lines include Finse , Glatt , and Flintware .
3. Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik
Founded in 1885 and still active, Porsgrund specializes in high-quality porcelain and has collaborated with Norwegian artists such as Eystein Sandnes . Their Lava collection from the 1970s is a good example of Norwegian modernism in ceramics.
4. Egersund Fayancefabrik
This factory started in 1847 and was one of the oldest in Norway. They produced faience and later also stoneware. In the 60s and 70s they brought out colorful, hand-painted dinnerware with Scandinavian patterns. The factory closed in 1979.
