Other France
France has a rich and refined tradition in ceramic and tableware production, with factories known worldwide for their elegance, craftsmanship and artistic flair. Here are some of the most influential French tableware factories:
1. Faiencerie de Gien
Founded in 1821 on the Loire, Gien is one of the most famous French faience factories. They produced hand-painted terrines, plates and teapots with classical and sometimes humorous motifs. Gien even designed tableware for the Orient Express.
2. Limoges
The name Limoges has become synonymous with high-quality porcelain. Since the discovery of kaolin in 1768, the region has grown into the centre of French porcelain. In the 19th century, dozens of factories flourished, including Alluaud, Haviland and Bernardaud. Limoges is known for its fine, white porcelain with refined decorations.
3. Sarreguemines
This factory produced both faience and porcelain and was active from the 18th century into the 20th century. They are famous for their colorful decors, such as Obernai and Agreste , and their robust tableware for everyday use.
4. Moulin des Loups / Orchies
A Northern French factory that is loved for its rural and floral decors. Think autumn leaves, garlands or blue patterns such as SYLVAIN . Many of these pieces can still be found on the antique market.
5. Digoin & Badonviller
Both factories produced sturdy earthenware with cheerful patterns, often in red, blue or green. They are popular with lovers of brocante and retro tableware.
6. Longwy
Known for his enamel-like glazes and Art Deco designs, Longwy combined ceramics with coppery contours and vibrant colors — a unique style that still stands out today.
