Other Germany
German faience factories have a fascinating history dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, when the European nobility had a great hunger for the “white gold” from China. Here are some notable names from the German faience world:
1. Meissen (Saxony)
Although Meissen is best known for its porcelain, it also began with faience in the early years. In 1710, the first European porcelain factory was founded here, but the transition from faience to hard porcelain marked a turning point in the history of ceramics.
2. Wächtersbach
Founded in 1832 in Hesse, this factory produced colourful faience with Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences. Their spray decoration (spritzdekor) is still recognisable today and is loved by collectors.
3. Elsterwerda
Less well known, but certainly charming: Elsterwerda produced faience with simple floral motifs in spritz decor, often in blue or green.
4. Bay Keramik
Although primarily active in the 20th century and known for his West Germany vases, Bay also produced faience-like decorative pieces with abstract patterns and earthy colours.
5. KPM Berlin (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur)
Founded in 1763 by Frederick the Great, KPM initially also produced faience before focusing entirely on porcelain. Their early pieces are rare and highly sought after.
6. Fürstenberg
One of the oldest still active porcelain factories in Germany, founded in 1747. Here too they started with faience before switching to porcelain.
